Gea Norvegica UNESCO Global Geopark
Eastern Norway, NorwayLarvik is part of the Gea Norvegica UNESCO Global Geopark.
The geology and natural history of the area are of international importance and so exciting that it has received a UNESCO award.
In the season from May to September, there are free guided tours in the Geopark.
The geopark is a limited area of 3000 km2 and is in Telemark and Vestfold county and includes the municipalities of Larvik, Bamble, Kragerø, Nome, Porsgrunn, Siljan and Skien.
Norway's national rock is called Larvikitt and is the dominant rock in Larvik.
Larvikitt is a rare rock, and when you see this popular ornamental stone with its beautiful blue play of colors on everything from wall facades on large buildings to countertops in kitchens and bar counters, you know it comes from Larvik.
Larvikitt is exported to all over the world.
