About Care Balkan

Founded in 2005, CARE Balkan is dedicated to fighting poverty, social injustice, and inequality in the Balkans. Our mission is to support vulnerable communities—especially women, children, and marginalized groups—by providing essential humanitarian aid, promoting sustainable development, and fostering lasting peace and stability across the region.

The Balkans face complex challenges such as poverty, gender inequality, displacement, and the impacts of climate change. CARE Balkan works to empower communities by improving access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities, while also advocating for human rights and social inclusion. Our programs also focus on climate resilience, sustainable agriculture, and disaster risk reduction, helping communities adapt to environmental changes.

We directly support initiatives that improve lives across the region. Providing immediate assistance to those affected by crises, empowering women through education and economic independence, and promoting sustainable, long-term development. Through successful projects, CARE Balkan has been making a real impact:

● Economic empowerment of women: CARE Balkan has helped women in rural areas gain financial independence through vocational training, entrepreneurship support, and small business grants. These programs have improved economic opportunities, helping women provide for their families and contribute to their communities.

● Youth employment initiatives: Our youth-focused programs offer training in digital skills, agriculture, and entrepreneurship, providing young people with the tools they need to find employment or start their own businesses. These efforts have reduced youth unemployment and empowered the next generation to build a more prosperous future.

● Climate resilience and sustainable agriculture: CARE Balkan has successfully implemented programs that support farmers to adopt sustainable agricultural practices. These projects promote the use of eco-friendly farming techniques, improve crop yields, and help communities adapt to climate change, ensuring food security and better livelihoods.

● Social inclusion and human rights: We work closely with marginalized groups, such as the Roma community, to improve access to education, healthcare, and basic services. By raising awareness about human rights and advocating for policy changes, CARE Balkan has helped create a more inclusive society.

CARE started its mission in the Balkans in the early 90s to provide emergency and medical assistance to people affected by the wars and the destruction, traumatisation, displacement and inter-ethnic distrust that they caused. During its early years, CARE focused on humanitarian and life-saving work.

Today, CARE’s aim in the Balkans is to ensure that the social, economic and political rights of vulnerable and marginalized groups are recognized and fulfilled, contributing to sustainable peace in the region. Humanitarian and emergency response activities remain a priority in emergency situations in line with the humanitarian mandate of CARE on a global level. And we will continue to change lives for the better and build a more just, equal, and resilient Balkan region.

CARE Balkans implements projects in the following countries and territories: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Albania.
