Reviving Dutch natural landscapes
About Ark Rewilding
Founded in 1989, Ark Rewilding is committed to rewilding the Dutch landscape by giving nature space to restore itself. Our mission is to return natural processes to the land, reintroduce native species, and create vibrant ecosystems where biodiversity can thrive. By focusing on key rewilding projects across the country, we help protect endangered species, rebuild ecosystems, and promote sustainable land use.
Ark Rewilding focuses on seven critical areas in the Netherlands, each with its own unique natural landscapes and conservation needs:
1. Maashorst – In this area, Ark reintroduces large herbivores like wild horses and European bison to restore grasslands and open woodlands. These animals play a key role in shaping the landscape, promoting plant diversity and creating a rich habitat for insects, birds, and small mammals.
2. Kempen-Broek – A cross-border region with Belgium, this area focuses on wetland and forest restoration. By reconnecting river systems and creating marshes, Ark helps restore natural water management and flood control while providing a home for species such as beavers and rare birds like the black stork.
3. Rivierenland – Ark is working to restore natural river dynamics along the Waal, Meuse, and Rhine rivers. This creates space for floodplain forests and wetlands, which support species like the beaver and otter while improving water quality and resilience to climate change.
4. Oostvaardersplassen – Known as one of the most famous rewilding areas in the Netherlands, Ark supports the natural processes in this wetland area, where large herbivores such as Konik horses, red deer, and Heck cattle roam freely, helping maintain a rich mosaic of habitats for waterfowl, fish, and small mammals.
5. Veluwe – Ark is working to restore the wild character of the Veluwe, one of the largest continuous natural areas in the Netherlands. By managing large herbivores and improving forest and heathland ecosystems, Ark helps create a more diverse habitat for species like the wild boar, red deer, and rare birds of prey.
6. Dutch Delta – In this coastal region, Ark is focused on marine and coastal rewilding, restoring tidal marshes and dunes to provide habitat for seals, fish, and water birds. By working with natural processes, the project also strengthens natural flood defenses and enhances biodiversity.
7. Hoge Kempen National Park (cross-border) – Though primarily in Belgium, this project extends into Dutch territory. Ark supports the reintroduction of native species and the restoration of heathlands and forests, creating a vital corridor for wildlife between the two countries.
